Do you remember where you were when you first heard Missy Elliot’s album, Supa Dupa Fly? I do. I was a freshman in college and me and my friends were just discovering how to finesse the Columbia House records “12 albums for 1 cent” promotion. Part of my “12 albums for 1 cent” was Missy Elliot’s Supa Dupa Fly. Rome of “I belong to you fame” debut album and SWV Release Some Tension we’re also part of that batch of music.
I, like many others, got a lot of run out of that album. Hits like “Sock it to Me” “Supa Dupa Fly” exposed the songwriter and producer to a bigger audience and solidified her as a legit star.
This week, Supa Dupa Fly turns 20 years old. Feel old yet? Her platinum album turned 2 decades old today. While her album and music and concepts we’re met with disdain by Hip-Hop purists then, her album, music and concepts have lived way past the criticism.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of her debut album, check out the now classic video for the title track below.
