Music: Curren$y & Lex Lugar The Motivational Speech EP Review (Video)

Who puts in more work than Spitta? When not on the road, the New Orleans rapper spends him time in the studios put together songs that will eventually make it past his hard drive. This year alone he promised new solo projects and a collaborations with Don Cannon and producer Lex Lugar. The latter came to fruition this past week.

Curren$y and producer Lex Lugar linked up for the 7-track EP, The Motivational Speech. The JetLife pilot Flys alone for the most part this times except the OJ the Juiceman assisted “The Field“. Fans got a chance to hear two tracks off the album, “Pressure” and “I Know” already. The rest of the album, most didn’t get to digest until the weekend.

Spitta Andretti and Lugar blend well together. Lugar’s haunting drums and synths fit perfect with Curren$y’s laid back way of painting pictures with his words. “Lavender” is a great example of that symmetry. Lugar provides the perfect soundscape for Curren$y to build out a verses full of opulence and optimism. “Niggas is killing friends over brotherly arguments/we should all just stay alive and just enjoy the shit/we work hard for this/my collections of cars are immense/I open jars and release a heavenly scent.”

If you’re familiar with Curren$y, this project doesn’t stray too far from his comfort zone. Weed, women, money and living life with his real friends make up a bulk of his material. What Andretti does better than most is make it feel fly.

At times, it can get redundant like generic “I Know“. “The Field” is where it works. Spitta spits a playa type verse that gives game the young, up-coming players streaming his new album. “Remember your O.G. told ya/when yall was burning gas like motors/take game from your rich uncle, sprinkle hash on these youngsters/never forget where you come from/lay your hustle down, then you come up/get your work done, then you go stunt.”

Overall, The Motivational Speech is o.k. It’s a reminder that Curren$y will forever be an underrated emcee with the talent and flair to get to another level. His penchant for staying in his comfort zone lyrically that halts that progress. The The Motivational Speech EP is good for one burn, but this mostly won’t make it into your daily rotation.
