Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed reminds me everyday why voting locally matters. In a last minute effort and after praising the vote, Reid has decided to veto the new legislation which would decriminalize cannabis in the city.
Per AJC
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed vetoed legislation that would have changed penalties on possession of small amounts of marijuana.
“We received an email overnight that the Mayor VETOED our marijuana legislation for less than one ounce,” the Atlanta City Council said early Wednesday in a tweet.
It was not immediately clear why Reed vetoed the measure.
In a tweet posted shortly after the vote, Reed thanked Atlanta City Councilmembers Kwanza Hall and Keisha Lance Bottoms “for your leadership on marijuana reform. I look forward to reviewing & signing this legislation.”
UPDATE
Kasim Reed’s communication director says that he did not veto the vote and that this was a political scheme cooked up by rival and Mayoral candidate Ceaser Mitchell. We will keep you updated as news comes in.
