The lead character, the sexually adventurous painter Nola Darling, played by DeWanda Wise searches for self, love and meaning to life all while adding new dilemmas such as dealing with evolving friendships and changing dynamics in her gentrified neighborhood of Fort Greene in Brooklyn.
To keep it fresh, Spike adds a new flair to his iconic character. Keeping true to what a regular Black girl living in 2017 New York City would do, this version of Nola has no problem seeking out the ganja leaf as her after work cocktail to knock off some stress. In good times and bad, Nola finds a way to spark up when needed.
Check out 5 moments during the show where Nola took a page out of Solange’s songbook and, “smoked it away.”
Episode 1
Nola speaking with Mars about a love poem that Jamie said to her the previous night in bed. In order to keep a straight face with her homie/lover/friend, she had to spark a joint that she happily shared with Mars
Episode 1
Later in that episode, to deal with the aftermath of being violently approached by a random stranger off the street while trying to hail a cab. She let the smoke in and the tears out as the first episode came to an end
Episode 5
Nola shares a joint with Jamie as he recalls his time growing up in the projects and the pride he has in his son.
This is before he finds out that his son has made a viral video exploiting racial stereotypes in hopes to go viral for a school project.
Episode 7
Dealing with the relationship issues and criticism of her first art exhibit,
Nola lights one up and puts in the sky and gets her mind together before dealing the drama ahead.
Episode 8
Like most people on November 8th 2016, Nola and her friends had to light one up and
pour out a couple to understand how a clown is now in the highest office in the land.
