So, one of my favorite interviews happened recently, and it happened on a whim.
As I was about to sit down and get ready to conduct an interview that we had scheduled at Livehiphopdaily studio, my show producer shows me his phone. I can’t recreate his accent, but imagine someone from the Bronx telling you, “Check this out son.”
I watched this clip below.
That’s Davinci Barcelo. A few hours earlier, he was being interviewed by CBS Atlanta. Davinci has been the center of controversy in Atlanta thanks to his desire to bring back Freaknik. If you don’t know what Freaknik is, I’m going to need you to Google it. I really don’t have the time, nor energy to explain it anymore. Just know it was pure debauchery. A mad combination of youth and freedom. To give you an image, imagine if The Tunnel or Studio 54 spontaneously happened, but outside for the world to see. It also is a representation to what many call, “old Atlanta.” The time before the rest of the world descended on the city. It’s a proud, cherished moment for many in the city.
Davinci is a product of that era. He loves that era so much that he named his company after it. He has a goal to bring the city a Atlanta a block party in the name of Freaknik. And he wants to do it in the historic Castleberry neighborhood.
So, this is where it gets tricky for Borcelo. The NPU heard the word Freaknik and freaked out. While there is not much they can do to halt Davinci and his plan, their cries of over-crowding and danger reached the media.
That’s where we come in. Our producer Herb contacted Davinci shortly after his interview with CBS asking him to come down to CashColorCannabis. He did, and we spoke.
We discussed his infatuation with Freaknik, how his mother introducing him to that life, why the name causes so much drama and why people should really pay attention to details.
Watch our interview below and lets us know how you feel about the return of Freaknik.
