LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes will host its 7th Annual Los Pobladores Tribute Fundraiser Dinner honoring Richard “Cheech” Marin, The Getty, and Icons de Arte on Wednesday, June 20. The annual dinner is one of the city’s largest gatherings of Latino leadership and supports the mission of LA Plaza to celebrate and cultivate an appreciation for local Mexican, Mexican-American, and Latino history, art, and culture.
Entertainer and preeminent Chicano art collector, advocate, and champion of Chicano artists Richard “Cheech” Marin and The Getty, one of the world’s largest arts organizations and lead to the recent collaborative initiative, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA – a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles – are recipients of the Pobladores Award. The Icons de Arte, which include members of the Chicano pioneering collectives and arts organizations: Los Four, ASCO; East Los Streetscapers; Self-Help Graphics; and Art; Goez Gallery; and The Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) will also be honored.
The event commences with a cocktail reception, dinner, program, and silent auction. Comedian and actor Rudy Moreno, known as the Godfather of Latino comedians, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Legendary guitarist Ray Carrion, a former member of AZTECA and El Chicano, leads Thee Latin Allstars, a group of musicians and singers who will play the best of Chicano oldies. Dinner will be catered by Chef Gilberto Cetina of longstanding family establishment Chichen Itza Restaurant.
“We are grateful for the generous support that has made possible our pursuit to shed light on the untold stories that make an impact in our community,” said John Echeveste, CEO, LA Plaza. “We congratulate our honorees and celebrate the influence they have made in the arts.”
Event proceeds to support the diverse schedule of free educational programs, exhibitions, and public programs that LA Plaza offers year-round. In 2017, LA Plaza was pleased to welcome more than 95,000 visitors, including more than 5,000 school children who visited for educational field trips to its award-winning Garden and Culinary Program workshops at no cost to the schools.
