In addition to the medical benefits cannabis can provide, the economic upside for Texas is HUGE.

The average consumption of cannabis by a patient in the U.S. costs $365 per month or $4,380 per year (Headset, Inc.). The population of Texas is somewhere in the neighborhood of 29 million people. If only 1 out of 10 people takes advantage of the proposed medical program, and uses medical cannabis, the numbers add up: $4,380 x 2,900,000 people = $12,702,000,000 per year. Obviously, for this to happen, the industry will have to be fully operational.

In order for the state of Texas to fulfill this demand, it will have to produce a minimum of 3,970,000 pounds a year to provide 1.3 pounds per patient (7.2 grams of oil).

A 10,000 square foot space produces about 1,500 pounds per year, on the first year (and we’re simplifying this greatly). So, Texas could need almost 2,600 of these 10,000 square foot cultivation facilities to meet the demands/needs of the patients.

Texas will also need about 8,450 dispensaries and at least 220,000 employees, not including the indirect jobs created from cultivation, transportation, lab, real estate, etc.
