This weekend, the ever-growing conversation over cannabis legalization got even bigger thanks to the Netflix original, ‘Grass is Greener.’
Narrated by pop culture icon Fab 5 Freddy, the documentary takes on cannabis prohibtion and what new laws that are coming onto the books can mean for people who were effected by the War on Drugs.
Featuring the likes of Snoop Dogg, Killer Mike, B-Real, alongside politicians and activists, the documentary drummed up a lot of buzz prior to its April 20th release on Netflix. After watching, I can say that most of the fan-fare was worth it.
Without giving away too much for those who haven’t watched yet, I can say that the film was great at explaining how over-policing certain communities and unjust laws led to the conundrum that we are in today.
Critics may point to the fact that the story was primarily told by celebrities and many key activists on the frontlines of cannabis legalization were missing from the conversation and that at times the story comes off repetitive.
Regardless of what anyone says, what ‘Grass is Greener’ will do is continue a conversation that has been brewing for sometime. How can a legal cannabis market exists in a world where many were faced unjust consequences over simple possession.
There will be those who will watch the film and understand the point they tried to make. There will also be people who will be totally opposed to the notion of anyone “jumping the line” in this new industry.
Lets all agree that ‘Grass is Greener’ will make for a few uncomfortable sessions and smoke parties over the next few months
