Macon Georgia follows the likes of Atlanta, Savannah, Clarkston and more as cities in the Georgia that have decided to reduce penalties for cannabis possession.
The ordinance passed with a 5-4 vote after weeks of public opinion and discussion.
The bill, proposed by Commissioner Al Tillman, would make Macon the 10th municipality in Georgia to pass a law making marijuana possession a misdemeanor.
The maximum penalties under state law for a misdemeanor marijuana possession is still one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The new ordinance allows deputies to hand out lesser penalties with no jail time.
