On the Topic of Impeachment: Ronald Reagan’s Close Call

Impeachment talks have consumed our timelines over the last few months. Donald J. Trump has only the 4th sitting Presdient to be formally brought up on impeachment charges.

The other three Presidents, Andrew Jackson, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. Clinton and Jackson survived while Nixon resigned before he could face any justice. There were other Presidents who faced impeachment, but the charges never made it to the Senate. Ronald Reagan was one.

On March 6, 1987, Representative Henry B. Gonzalez introduced articles of impeachment against President Ronald Reagan regarding the Iran Contra affair, leading to the joint hearings that dominated the summer. The six-article resolution accuses Reagan of violating U.S. law and of acting ″in a manner contrary to his trust as president and subversive of constitutional government.″

Reagan would go on to survive impeachment and become a conservative super hero. Gonzalez would go on an introduce articles for Impeachment on George H. Bush as well. Not for his part in Iran-Contra, but for his part in starting the Gulf War.
