The Legend Of Nate Newton: The Time A 6x Pro-Bowler Moved Over 300 LBS of Weed

Recently, Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Greg Robinson was arrested in Texas with 157 pounds of weed.

Robinson was riding along with ex-N.F.L. player Quan Bray when the two were stopped by police. The two were searched and police found several duffle bags full of weed, along with scales and other paraphernalia.

As crazy as the story sounds, it’s comes no where close to the legend of Nate Newton.

The Florida A&M grad came into the league in 1983 with the Washington Redskins. He’d play a stint with the now-defunct U.S.F.L Tampa Bay Bandits before he caught on with the Dallas Cowboys.

Playing with the Cowboys, Newton was named to the Pro-Bowl 3 times and won 3 Super Bowls with them. After his career ended in 1999 with the Panthers, Nate was left without the job he’s held for years. He did find a substitute. It just wasn’t what any fan expected.

On November 4th 2001 police in St. Martin ParishLouisiana, arrested Newton after he was found to have 213 pound of marijuana during a traffic stop.

The story was big news at the time being that he was still just a few years away from his glory days with the Cowboys. You would thought the story would’ve stopped here, but no.

Weeks later that Nate would be back in the news.

Weeks later Nate would be stopped again!

December 12, 2001, Newton was stopped in Texas and was arrested. This time, he had 175 pounds of marijuana on him.

All in all, Nate was caught with 388 pounds of weed in a 5-week period.

He would eventually do 30 months in federal prison for his 5-week reign as a drug runner. It was said that he was to make about $75k per deal.

Not an N.F.L. contract, but it was good enough.

Newton, now lives a clean life, far away from the world of drug dealing in any way.
