Lit Lines: Rappers Who Expressed The 420 Experience In A Few Lines

Keith Murray

Keith Murray "The Most Beautifullest Thing In The World"

“Roll up a fat one and pass it around. Laid back hypnotized to the funky sound”

Since I was first exposed to cannabis, most of my experiences with the plant have involved music. There are times when now when I will think about a song or an album and remember what I smoking at the time. I’m sure I’m not the only one. Many consumers are like me. Their experience is personal, often one-on-one. You use it as a time to reflect or create. It could be a time to meditate. But usually, music will play a part.

Today is the highest holiday for cannabis consumers, 420. To celebrate, CashColorCannabis pulled together some rap lyrics that highlight the cannabis experience in various ways. From JAY Z’s introspective look at cannabis use on “Feelin It” or Pimp C’s brash “Smoke something bxxxh” check out some lit lyrics below.

Keith Murray “The Most Beautifullest Thing In The World”

Keith Murray penned what may be one of the better odes to the plant when he dropped “The Most Beautifullest Thing in The World”. The lead single off Murray’s debut album, the track gave us some major gems and weed mentions. This is one of my favorites.

Styles P featuring Swizz Beatz “Blow My Mind”

In 2007, Styles P stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight with his debut solo album Super Gangster. As part of hip-hop trio The Lox, Styles had already carved out a reputation as one of the sharper emcees in the game. Super Gangster allowed the world to get to know more about him as an artist. One thing you learned is that Styles had a love for bud.

His first single, “Blow Your Mind” would attest to that. Teaming up with frequent collaborator Swizz Beatz, Styles crafted a 420 anthem that spawned a ton a quotable bars.

JAY Z “Feelin It”

For close to four decades, JAY Z has given his all musically. Fans have got a chance to learn all about the life of the hustler from Marcy projects. One thing we have learned is that Hova does not smoke weed. He would drop slick lines here and there about taking a toke, but he was no where on the level of even his Roc-A-Fella counterparts like Beanie Sigel and Memphis Bleek when it came loving the plant.

As I type this today, he has clearly had a change of heart from his early days. Betwen his dealings with Calvia and his launch of Monogram, you where he stands today.

There was a time when Hov wouldn’t come close to talking about weed. This line from his 1996 classic Reasonable Doubt sums up Hov and his relationship with weed at the time.

Notorious B.I.G “Big Poppa”

The Notorious B.I.G. gave the world one of the smoothest lines that ever incorporated cannabis.

“Big Poppa” became a massive hit of B.I.G.’s first album Ready To Die. The song was an automatic club banger and certified him as rap heart throb. It’s only fitting that B.I.G. would also give you listeners a few lines you could drop one someone as you made your exit out of the club. Serious, can you imagine how many times this line has been used after the lights come on in the club. “Baby Baybay!”

Cypress Hill “Insane in The Brain”

This is the first entry where the lyrics didn’t come from an acts first album. No, this dandy comes courtesy of Cypress Hill and their second album.

At this point, Cypress Hill have turned in a musical monster. With fans coming from both rap and rock, B-Real, Sen Dogg and Dj Muggs became a hybrid of sorts. (insert joke)

From the second the crew jumped on the scene, we knew that they were fond of the green. Their single “Insane In The Brain” was a hit on delivery. The accompanying video introduced us to trippy images, crowd surfing and weed smoke.

The Luniz “I Got 5 On it”

When it comes to weed anthem, very few come close to becoming as iconic as “I Got 5 On It.” in 1995, Yukmouth and Numskull made a song that almost every consumer can relate to. I mean, who hasn’t at one point had to ask their smoking partner if they got something on this sack. It’s also a reminder that a good session is a team effort. ‘Cause I’ll be damned if you get high off me for free
Hell no! You better bring your own spliff, chief
.

Nas “Halftime”

Nasir Jones was still a teen when he released Illmatic. The 5 mic classic was one of the many projects that came out in the early 90’s that would set the tone for what hip-hop would look and sound like for the next 10-years.

Nas openly spoke about his love of the buddha on this album. This line is one of many where Nas takes time to recognize the power of the plant in his life.

Channel Live

When talking about Lit Lyrics, we cannot forget about Channel Live. In 1995, emcees Tuffy and Hakim Green tapped KRS-One for what would become a huge single for the duo. “Mad Izm” was perfect for the hip-hop landscape at the time.

During this time, Phillies were the go to method for many weed smokers and acts like Notorious B.I.G, Snoop Dogg, Method Man and Redman would make cannabis use look cooler than a fan. When this record dropped, it would become an athem for all proud smokers at the time.

Bun B ft Pimp C & Z-Ro “Get Throwed”

“Smoke somethin bitch” This might be one of the best intros to a song ever!

Pimp C set off Bun B’s “Get Throwed” with a saying that lives on today. The saying might be more popular than the song. Before the end of the day, look at someone and say “Smoke somethin bitch”
