Elevating Black Art: Jerry Joseph Blends Creativity and Cannabis
Haitian-American artist Jerry Joseph is on a mission. What’s that mission? He wants to raise the bar for black art. Using his work to tell stories about class, poverty, and human existence, he wants his art to remind other black artists that there are more stories.
His “High Black Art” series is an ode to that mission. All pieces are not just inspired by cannabis but also lean into what he wants to accomplish as a black artist. His latest work debuted at The Broccoli Gallery and is still available for viewing.
Joseph recently displayed his collection at the Cannaversations Brunch in Boston. Eventgoers could view the work and listen to Joseph explain each piece and what inspired him to make it.
“My ideas, I feel like it’s bigger than just my art. It has to do with the psyche of the black artists and the black mind, and how we could plant better seeds,” said Joseph about his goal for the series.
