Ayahuasca, Haiti, and Healing: 5 Things I Learned from Laury Lucien
Recently, I had the honor of sitting down with Laury Lucien—an attorney, educator, and entrepreneur whose journey spans from the hills of Haiti to the heart of Boston’s cannabis industry. Our conversation covered everything from her first experiences with cannabis to the spiritual insights gained through ayahuasca. Below are five takeaways that stuck with me long after we wrapped.
Haiti Was Her First Introduction to Cannabis
For Laury, cannabis wasn’t just a plant—it was part of her environment growing up in Haiti. Long before the legal industry entered her radar, she witnessed how cannabis was cultivated and used in cultural and practical ways. That early exposure planted a seed that would later grow into her career path.
“The first time I experienced a plant was in Haiti, “said Laury. “I was a child, and behind the church was a field where someone had grown lots of marijuana. It was a huge field. That’s when I first saw the plant and knew of its existence. Growing up in Port-au-Prince, we know that herbs are extremely important to our process and healing. So I always had positive feelings about marijuana.”
She’s a Natural-Born Educator
Whether in the courtroom or the classroom, Laury’s heart is in teaching. She strongly believes in making information accessible, particularly when it comes to navigating cannabis law and entrepreneurship. Her passion for education is evident in the way she breaks down complex topics and uplifts those around her.
“I apologize to my little sisters,” she said when thinking about how she got into education. “I would force them to sit, and I would teach them whatever I was learning in school, so I’ve been a teacher my whole life it’s like woven into the fabric of my soul to be a teacher.”
Ayahuasca Shifted Her Perspective
Laury shared her journey with ayahuasca, a powerful plant medicine renowned for unlocking profound spiritual insights. That experience helped her connect more intentionally with her purpose and reinforced her conviction that plants are tools for healing, not just a business. She’s heading off to Colombia soon for her next trip.
“But I think it’s one of the most powerful medicines on this planet because it allows you to truly discover who you are. When you’re dealing with things that are too heavy for you, it’s how I was able to break through the darkest depression of my existence. Ayahuasca is a tool for spiritual evolution. It’s a tool given to us by the creator to help us reach points of enlightenment.
Cultivation Over Retail: A Love for Growing
When it comes to the business of cannabis, many people think about storefronts. Everyone wants a dispensary. But the amount of red tape that’s involved with opening a store, along with the high tax rates and other issues that come along, like quality of product and crime, may be worth your time to look into another part of the industry. However, if you are going to grow, ensure that you do so with intention.
“If you are a cultivator, take really good care of the plants. If you love her, she loves you back. Your customers will feel that.”
Legacy Matters More Than Titles
More than being remembered as a lawyer or entrepreneur, Laury wants her legacy to reflect the lives she has touched and the barriers she has helped dismantle. Her mission is rooted in impact—educating, empowering, and opening doors for others to walk through.
