Half-Court, Full Impact: The Big 3’s Bold Play on Sports and Wellness
It’s NBA playoff season, and while all eyes are locked on the chase for the Larry O’Brien trophy, there is another court where legends and overlooked talents continue to shine, the Big 3.
Ice Cube’s 3-on-3 basketball league isn’t just entertainment during the off-season; it’s becoming a proving ground and, in some cases, a second chance for players whose stories deserve more runtime.
The Big 3 doesn’t just stand out because of the half-court setup or the trash talk; it’s the opportunities it creates. Older players, those recovering from injuries, or even hoopers who never quite fit the NBA mold, get to lace up and play on their terms. It’s a competition with culture baked in.
The Big 3 was also the first professional league to allow players to use CBD for recovery openly. Whether said or not, they deserve credit for that bold move. Since then, we have seen leagues like MLB accept CBD brands as advertisers, while the NBA now allows players to consume and invest in cannabis brands.
The league’s early adoption of the CBD policy was most likely no coincidence. Al Harrington, a face of cannabis advocacy and one of our Loud Legacies features, is a major stakeholder in the league.
The NBA is grabbing the headlines this time of year, but don’t sleep on the Big 3. It’s more than a league, it’s a movement. And it’s playing a long game that might change how we think about sports, healing, and legacy.
