5 Things We Took Away from Our Interview with Hope Wiseman
This week on CashColorCannabis: A High Level of Conversation, we caught up with the one and only Hope Wiseman—entrepreneur, educator, and the youngest Black woman to own and operate a cannabis dispensary in the U.S. Hope’s journey with Mary & Main has gone from humble beginnings to industry-defining success, and now she’s focused on lifting others up with her new platform, Legal and License.
Here are five things we walked away with after our powerful convo with Hope:
Being First Means Learning the Hard Way
Hope opened Mary & Main in 2018, navigating a medical-only, highly regulated Maryland market. Competing against massive MSOs (multi-state operators) just to secure her license, she learned early that the system wasn’t built for folks like her, and she’s spent the last several years helping to change that. “The processes are extremely rigorous and cost a lot of money,” she told us, “Your average social equity applicant just can’t compete under those conditions.”
Retail Is Just the Start
Hope’s next chapter focuses on wholesale and manufacturing in Maryland and New Jersey. She knows where the margins live and is not shy about building out that infrastructure. “We’re creating products, getting into the CPG side… we’re not just trying to scale retail stores anymore.”
Education Isn’t Optional—It’s Survival
Her new initiative, Legal and License, is a full-circle mentorship and educational platform built from her own experiences. “You can’t play cannabis,” she said. “There’s too much money, too many regulations, and the stakes are too high.” From compliance to corporate structure to knowing when (and how) to bring in help, she’s laying out the blueprint so others don’t have to stumble through the same pitfalls.
Culture Is the Key
From her social media presence to how she trains her team, Hope understands that community and authenticity are currency. “We realized early on that our social media wasn’t to sell—it was to reflect who we are,” she shared. “We use it to attract like-minded folks who see themselves in us.”
Legacy Means Lifting As You Climb
What’s most powerful about Hope is her commitment to not gatekeeping. Legal and License isn’t just a name—it’s a movement. “The reason that I’m successful is because I’ve always said I’ll be there and do what I can,” she said. “I’m putting my own mask on first, but I’m still helping everybody else.”
Hope Wiseman’s not just building businesses—she’s building blueprints. Make sure you check out legalandlicense.com to get tapped in.
