The Evil Bong Rabbit Hole Is Real, and I Need Answers
Every once in a while, I will do what they call “doom scroll.” Just go down the timeline of whatever social media platform I’m on until my fingers get tired or my mind says, “Alright, my guy, you’ve had enough.”
Today, I was doing some doom scrolling, and somehow, I found myself so deep in the trenches that I discovered a movie that I should have never known about. And I can’t take sole credit for this discovery. I have to give credit where credit is due. This find came from the page of JoJo Blacco. It was there that he was discussing real movies that actually exist on Tubi.
For those who don’t know, Tubi is a streaming platform that has made a name for itself by hosting some of the craziest movies that you could ever find. I watched him run down a list of movies and their ridiculous titles until one made me stop in my tracks. It’s called Evil Bong. Of course, I had to go search for more about this because, why does this even exist?
What I found was a rabbit hole that featured multiple sequels and a collab movie that sounds too stupid to be real.
The film that kicked off the Evil Bong franchise debuted in 2006 and is billed as a “stoner horror” movie from cult filmmaker Charles Band and his independent studio, Full Moon Features. The premise is exactly what it sounds like. A group of college roommates discovers an ancient, possessed bong named EeBee. Anyone who takes a hit is transported into a bizarre alternate dimension called Bong World, where getting high is the least of your problems.
Now, if you think someone in Hollywood looked at that script and said, “One movie is enough,” you’d be very much wrong, my friend.
What started as what should have been a one-off direct-to-DVD oddity somehow turned into one of the most unexpectedly committed cannabis movie franchises ever made. The series eventually spawned Evil Bong 2: King Bong, Evil Bong 3: The Wrath of Bong, Evil Bong 420, Evil Bong High 5!, Evil Bong 666, Evil Bong 777, and Evil Bong 888: Infinity High. That’s nine mainline entries centered around a homicidal bong with an attitude. Fun fact, between 2015-2018, they released one a year! There was that much demand for Evil Bong material.
And my favorite part of this insane story. At some point, someone at Full Moon looked at this franchise and thought, “You know what this needs? More baked goods,” the series crossed over with another one of the studio’s cult horror properties.
In 2013, audiences were gifted Gingerdead Man vs. Evil Bong, a movie that pits a murderous, foul-mouthed gingerbread cookie against EeBee the Evil Bong in what can only be described as the cinematic equivalent of someone emptying the contents of a dispensary and a bakery into a blender. Even better, the crossover brings together characters from both franchises instead of simply throwing the two mascots into the same movie and calling it a day.
By this point, I wasn’t even asking whether these movies were good. That question had long since left the chat. Instead, I found myself wondering how committed everyone involved had to be to build an entire shared universe around a possessed bong. Somewhere along the way, this franchise stopped being a joke and became a genuinely impressive display of low-budget persistence. And I love that.
As for the future? Evil Bong 888: Infinity High, released in 2022, was promoted by Full Moon as the “final” installment in the main series, seemingly bringing EeBee’s nearly two-decade run to a close. Then again, this is the same studio that has spent decades reviving franchises that most people forgot existed. If Charles Band wakes up tomorrow and decides the world needs Evil Bong 999, I wouldn’t bet against it. Stranger things have already happened. Maybe an Evil Bong, Stranger Things collab. The possibilities.
